A shed load of creativity.

The Writing Hut was founded by Sarah and Tim Gibson in 2009. Before that, Tim had spent 15 years as a freelance journalist and copywriter, working for local and national newspapers and clients across a variety of sectors.

Sarah’s background was in the travel industry and then as a lawyer. But as Tim’s roster of clients grew, they realised they had the makings of a bigger company – one that could deliver first-rate writing and communications strategy.

So The Writing Hut Ltd came to life. Originally housed in a shed in their garden, the business soon grew, gaining clients such as American Express, Volvo Car UK and Smiths News plc along the way. They outgrew the original hut and decided to expand the business, becoming the communications consultancy you see today.

Tim and Sarah pride themselves on building long-term personal relationships with clients. They handle all client contact themselves, and every bit of copy that leaves the hut passes through Tim’s hands.

And, just in case you’re wondering, yes: they do still write in a hut. Some habits are hard to break.

Tim Gibson

Co-founder and director

Tim started out as a journalist in his teens, filing copy for the likes of Kit Car Magazine and dreaming of being the next Tiff Needell. Over the years, he’s worked on titles from The Western Morning News to The Daily Telegraph, and several specialist newsstand magazines in between.

Over time, he expanded his range and developed a profile as a corporate copywriter. He’s produced content for some of the biggest brands in the world, including Volvo Car UK, KPMG, and American Express. He’s also developed expertise as a communications specialist, serving as Communications Director of John Wainwright & Company Ltd since 2016.

Alongside his writing career, Tim’s a well-established academic with a PhD in ethics. He was Deputy Head of the School of Creative & Cultural Industries at UWE Bristol from 2021 to 2023 and continues to teach there. Prior to that, he held senior positions in the Church of England’s Theological Education Institutions in the South West.

Oh, yes, that’s the other thing: Tim’s a C of E priest, working in his spare time in a group of parishes in South Somerset and writing books about theology, ethics and philosophy.

Sarah Gibson

Co-founder, director and photographer-in-residence

Sarah read French and Spanish at university and has always had a nerdy interest in how language works. She’s our resident grammar expert, casting an eagle eye over our copy and ensuring it’s in tip-top shape.

That attention to detail served Sarah well during her years as a lawyer. But her creative spirit wasn’t satisfied, so she decided to join Tim and set up The Writing Hut in 2009.

Since then, she’s published articles in newsstand magazines and written copy for SMEs in a variety of sectors. Sarah offers creative consultancy on many of our projects, and is a crucial foil to Tim.

She’s also finessed her natural talent for photography, launching our sister company Sarah Gibson Photography in 2018.

Sarah is recognised for her striking natural portraiture. She regularly carries out commercial and editorial commissions alongside her thriving school photography, family and pet portrait business.
